Skateboarding contest on tap in SV The 12th annual Tim Brauch Memorial Contest is Oct. 2 in Scotts Valley. The contest — sponsored by Scotts Valley-based Sessions — features top professional skateboarders from around the world.

The “street” portion of the contest will take place at the Tim Brauch Memorial Skatepark at Skypark, 361 Kings Village Road, in Scotts Valley beginning at 10 a.m. The bowl contest will take place at Lake Cunningham Regional Skate Park in San Jose on Sunday, Oct. 3.

The contest is named after Sessions team rider Tim Brauch, who died at age 25. Sessions created the Tim Brauch Memorial Fund, which donates 100 percent of its proceeds to skate park development.

Cougar cross country excels

The San Lorenzo Valley boys and girls cross country teams won their first dual meets of the season, each defeating Soquel, Saint Francis and Mt. Madonna high schools.

The boys top seven runners finished first through seventh on the Soquel High School course, led by Cody Johnson in 14 minutes, 24 seconds. He was followed by Landis McMillan, Alex Rinkert, Nick Hicks and Branden Caldwell.

After finishing second at the RLS Relay Invite, the boys are ranked No. 6 overall in the Central Coast Section and No. 1 in Division IV.

The girls team, led by Anna Maxwell in 16:44 and Abby Sherman in 16:45, also won the dual meet in dominating fashion. The Cougars took five of the top six positions.

The girls won the RLS Relay Invite and are ranked fifth in the CCS and No. 1 in Division IV.

Both teams run at the Stanford Invitational this weekend.

Tennis clinic for youngsters

Bear Creek Country Club, 15685 Forest Hill Drive, in Boulder Creek, will host a Quick Start Tennis demo day for those age 10 and younger at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 25.

Quick start is a form of tennis for younger children that uses a smaller court, modified scoring and specialized equipment to make tennis fun.

The demo day is free.

Volleyball teams open league play The Scotts Valley High volleyball team is 1-2 in league play after defeating rival San Lorenzo Valley 3-0 on Sept. 14 and falling to St. Francis and Mount Madonna on Sept. 16 and 21, respectively.

San Lorenzo Valley is 0-3 in the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League and has yet to win a set against a league foe.

SLV softball league kicks off

The San Lorenzo Valley IOOF Adult Softball League fall season is under way.

The Steelheads are 2-0 to lead the coed “A” league, and Monty’s Log Cabin leads the “B” league with a 2-0 record.
