EDITOR,

Protest, if you will, Pacific Gas and Electric Co.’s plans to install SmartMeters because you believe they’re part of a corrupt, profit-mongering corporation. Protest because you think you’ll be cheated by improper billing. Or protest because you still want a human being to read your meter. But please, don’t object to smart meters based upon your vague fears of electromagnetic radiation and the effects it may have on your health.

Radiation-induced cancers are caused by ionizing radiation, which breaks chemical bonds and causes genetic mutations in living tissue. Each of us are bathed — and have been for decades — in electromagnetic radiation, including radio frequency, microwave and optical radiation, none of which are ionizing forms of electromagnetic radiation and therefore capable of causing cancer. Only ultraviolet and shorter-wavelength types of electromagnetic radiation (e.g., x-rays) are capable of causing cancer.

It is 105 years since Albert Einstein’s demonstration of this principle — the photoelectric effect — for which he won his Nobel Prize. He proved that it is the wavelength of electromagnetic radiation that matters, not the intensity.

Electromagnetic radiation emitted by cell phones or SmartMeters cannot cause cancer by any known physical means. A high enough intensity of non-ionizing radiation, however, might get you hot (via infrared and visible radiation in sunlight, for example) or heat your food (via the effects of microwaves on water molecules). But it won’t break chemical bonds and give you cancer. If you don’t understand this, ask someone who does.

If you still believe you’re at personal risk due to cell phones and SmartMeters, or that you’ve discovered a heretofore unidentified cancer-causing agent in your collection of personal electronics, try a tin hat. Aluminum foil works well — it’s just as effective as avoiding cell phone use. Just don’t cut your finger on the box.

"A large body of research exists, both epidemiological and experimental, in non-human animals and in humans, that shows overall NO evidence for harmful effects."

Thank you Jeff for adding some sanity and intelligence to this rather insane fear and ignorance-based rant.

Thank you Jeff Bailey for a rather informative and accurate letter! It is nice to know that there are a few people in this county that actually know what they are talking about.

what a croc. this Hart character even admits he doesn't knwo what he's talking about ("EMF" when he meant "EM Radiation") and yet fools continue to listen to him.

Here a clearly educated individual posts FACTS regarding these devices (not to mention the smart meter isn't inches from your head!) and poeple Like david ehm cites nonsense. where are your facts, Mr Ehm? a blog created by the crazies who continue to spew nonsense. great source of facts.

millions of people have been using radios for years without problems. just another fact.

smart meters aren't dangerous. and if people actually paid any attention to their electrical bills they'd notice that PGE jacks up the rates in the sunmmer time every year. just because I got a new meter recently did not affect that one bit. paranoid people out there.

every epidemiological study confirms that cell phones do cause cancer. industry funded studies are written up as inconclusive but if read completely it will show an increase in cancer. to not know this at this point in our deevolution is to have your head in the sand/box. please check www.wirelesswatchblog.com many articles and referrals to websites with scientific studies. without being too hysterical, the cell phone was marketed with no premarket safety testing and will cause more casualties than tobacco and asbestos combined.
