Charges were filed against the owners of Round Up Pet Center in Scotts Valley after dead fish and rodents were found in the shuttered shop in March.

Brenda and Brian Sanders have been charged with the willful abandonment of an animal, general animal neglect, and failure to keep up the pet store’s maintenance and care of the premises, said Todd Stosuy of Santa Cruz County Animal Services.

Stosuy said the investigation is complete, and animal services has filed a report with the District Attorney’s Office on May 27.

“These are all misdemeanor charges that could have any number of outcomes,” Stosuy said.

Those possible outcomes include jail time, restitution and probation, Stosuy said.

Dozens of dead animals were found in the vacated shop March 31, more than a month after the business shut its doors because the owners could not afford the rent.

Round Up Pet Center operated out of King’s Village Shopping Center on Mount Hermon Road before it went out of business in late February.

Four hamsters, two Thai crabs, two crawfish, three saltwater snails, a catfish and 18 goldfish were found dead in the shop, according to animal services reports. A small number of fish and crabs that were still alive were taken by the agency.

“This case really illustrates that Animal Services won’t stand for cruelty and abuse, no matter what the animal,” Stosuy said.

Those fish that died were feeder fish. Meant to be bought to feed to carniverous animals or bigger fish. I agree more should have been done. The story I heard was the former owners of Round up sold and partnered with the new pet shop Animal House, who bought most of their stock and animals they could not sell before they vacated. The guys from Animal house grabbed most of the livestock but accedentally missed a few things but felt they grabbed everything and were locked out by Ow manegement the very next day. When the Ow company came back to see the condition of the property they found a few dead animals and called the authorities and the press. Ow management had been burned in a few months rent so I'm sure they had an ax to grind. Brenda and Bryan were on vacation and were not around for the clean up but had planned to partner and work at Animal house till all the bad press. Animal house made the business decision to distance themselves and deny any relationship with Brenda and Bryan even though it was partially Animal houses fault for not taking all the stock they bought from Brenda and Bryan. I think it was basically a unfortunete series of events magnified by the press running with a story before all the facts were out.

Sorry Hugh, your analogy doesn't fly. Brenda and Bryans pets were not in their natural environment or being sold for human consumption.

Their purchase of the pets came with an ethical understanding that they care for those animals. There were numerous choices they could and should have made to prevent the unnecessary deaths.

I feed rats to my snakes weekly...the rats suffer sometimes and it's sad... Is the spca gonna charge my boas with animal abuse? I love crab, they catch them and scald them to death just so I can dip them in butter and chew them up and convert them to waste matter....is that abuse? My cats kill smaller critters in the yard for fun and recognition on a daily basis, you gonna bring charges up on my cat? I eat more weight in fish at a sushi lunch than died at Round up, you gonna haul my wasabi loving ass in front of a judge? I did a lot of business with Brenda and Bryan and they were super nice .... So don't judge them with a stomach full of factory farmed animal protein turning into waste matter....

How sad. We can get upset over the death of some rodents, crabs, and goldfish but not over sticking a forceps into a full term baby's brain shortly before delivery (aka partial birth abortion) They don't feel pain?

Don't know anything but what I read here and I bought MANY Gold fish for my pond there. What a waste of public money! This place was like a Zoo! There were hundreds of animals of one type or another in there.I think these people did a good job taking care of these animals! Obviously they were having some problems or they wouldn't have shut down.Give them a break.I can't imagine the difficulties of running this small business let alone closing it down.Dead rodents and fish? Sad,maybe, criminal, NO!

Are these people connected in any way to Animal House on SV Drive?

This is erroneous. No charges have been filed. All the facts are not out yet. No case should be tried in the media.

Al those animals could have been given away to people who would have cared for them properly. Especially, the hamsters. What assholes! Too bad they will probably only get a fine...

Good, now lets make sure they actually get punishment, I'm sure they wont do jail time but they need to have their clocks cleaned.
