EDITOR,

A key first step in creating Scotts Valley’s new library is a library community meeting on Monday, Oct. 26, at the Scotts Valley Community Center from 7 to 9 p.m. We want to hear from you on the types of library activities, services and features you want in your new library.

Representatives from the city and the Scotts Valley Branch Library will join the city’s library consultant and architects to hear your ideas.

We will have image boards showing the latest library trends, present a variety of programs and qualities for discussion and have participatory exercises to ensure the community’s library priorities are properly matched with our limited resources.

This is an exciting time as we prepare for a brand-new library more than twice as large as our current one. Please be part of the conversation. See you then!

Do you really need a library to the tune of almost 20 million dollars? What about putting all that to a new middle school instead? Are you rich? I thought the city was short of money? Maybe they're planning on all the income from Target and Town Center to pay for it. How long will it stay a library? Will it someday just become part of the Town Center?

Did you see the Mobsters program today on tv?

They were well connected.

They acted as Robin Hood, handed out food to the poor at christmas, and visited children at schools with donations.

They had their friends in city government.

They had their friends in the police.

They had connections throughout the region, including judges.

They were italian.

They had people who decided who were promoted or not.

They had a hard time not building big, there were a lot of hands in the pot.

Even the choice of picking to build this library in the face of the other city concerns is questionable and for, $1,400 a square foot, maybe it's time to look back at the other city developments and do an audit. It's time to se where the money REALLY is going, and who is getting it.

Time to call for some outside intervention, FBI comes to mind.

The same reason why the city voters turned down a fire station 4 times and a school bond because of the BLOAT.

Yea, that library can do the same thing if they sponsor a book store with meeting facilities, like Boarders, Today we have the Internet, the need for a wall to wall library is no longer necessary.

Provide educational software, internet access, and comfortable places to use laptops and stations they provide. A couple conference areas with living room furniture and beanbags for the kids.

Would cost far less that 17 MM. Even replacing the computers every year.

SPEND, Hi SPEND, how SPEND are You? SPEND. SPEND SPEND SPEND.

How about having companies pay livable wages and reward info-commuting instead of warehouse stores.

Wake the heck up.

Here is a suggestion. Build us a library that isn't going to cost the taxpayers $17 million.

$4,500,000 to buy the building

$6,700,000 cost to remodel only 13,000 sq feet of the building

$ 533,000 Architect fee for just 13,000 sq feet of building

$5,500,000 Interest payable on the bonds the City will issue to cover the full cost.

----------

$17,200,000 for a 13,000 sq foot library. Or $1,470 per ever individual in Scotts Valley.

Cost per sq foot =$1,307

It is great we are getting a new library but why the out of control spending?
