Middle school teams roll to titles

Both the combined sixth- and seventh-grade team and the eighth-grade girls basketball team at Scotts Valley Middle School completed the season undefeated with 7-0 records.

The teams won their regular-season championships and competed in postseason tournaments this week.

The players on the eighth-grade team have not lost a game in more than two years, and this year, they averaged 52 points per game while allowing their opponents a meager 21.

Nadene Hart, with an average of 16.4 points per game, and Angela Silver, with 15.6, led the eighth-grade team.

Hall of fame dinner to move

Because of In Vino Veritas’ sudden closure this week, the Falcon Hall of Fame Dinner will move to Peachwoods restaurant, 555 Highway 17. The dinner starts at 6 p.m., and reservations are required.

Roller derby tryout Tuesday

The Santa Cruz Derby Girls expect nothing short of madness at the 60-woman league’s open tryout Tuesday, Oct. 27, at 8 p.m. at the Scotts Valley Sports Center.

Potential players are expected to run laps, do squats, skate backward, glide on one foot, stop correctly and more.

Current players say that once you partake in derby-mania, you’re in it for life.

Bring a helmet, wrist guards, a mouth guard, kneepads and skates if you have them.
