The Scotts Valley Chamber of Commerce will recognize the contributions of several community members at a gala evening next month, A Toast to Scotts Valley. The night will feature food, awards presentations, entertainment and live and silent auctions.

Woman of the Year: Mary Dettle

Vine Hill Elementary School fifth-grade teacher Mary Dettle specializes in the sciences and has raised her students’ science proficiency.

Dettle has been president of the Scotts Valley Educational Foundation and vice president of several parent-teacher associations. She also serves on the Scotts Valley Art and Wine Festival Committee.

Man of the Year: Jim Reed

Jim Reed, Scotts Valley’s vice mayor, has led the Vine Hill Dinner and Auction Committee to help pay for classroom coaches, art, music and dance activities, and a computer lab and lab assistant at Vine Hill Elementary School. He has also participated in beautification and fundraising projects there.

Reed spearheaded the creation of the Friends of Scotts Valley Library and works with Scotts Valley Little League. He contributes sports and feature stories to the Press-Banner and represents the city on the Library Joint Powers Board.

Youth of the Year: Annika Gustafsson

Annika Gustafsson has served as secretary of Scotts Valley High School’s Key Club for two years, helping with the city’s Fourth of July fireworks event, the high school’s haunted house, homecoming and the Scotts Valley Art & Wine Festival.

She is founding president of the One Dollar for Life Club at the high school, which raises money for a school in Africa. She is secretary of the school’s California Scholarship Federation and has volunteered with the Santa Cruz Homeless Shelter, the American Red Cross and the Wharf to Wharf race.

Organization of the Year: Scotts Valley Unified School District PTAs

The Scotts Valley Parent-Teacher Associations support the four Scotts Valley schools with fundraisers that provide classroom supplies and stipends for music and art, technology, libraries, after-school enrichment and other needs.

They serve as ambassadors for the Scotts Valley Chamber of Commerce.

SV Beautification: BCI Builders

Taking the lead in green building in Scotts Valley, BCI Builders designed and built the Tree Circus Center on Scotts Valley Drive to meet the requirements of both the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for New Construction and the city of Scotts Valley’s green building program.

Editors Note: It was brought to our attention that the below comment is not from Scotts Valley City Councilman Jim Reed. Press-Banner policy is to identify comments that are falsely attributed. Contact editor Peter Burke at peter@pressbanner.com with any questions.

This is Jim Reed, and those of you who criticize people like me and others who volunteer are really pathetic. If you want to get recognized by your peers, try doing something positive instead of your anonymous hate filled snipings at people who give selflessly to our community. Your negativity is why I and others on the Council don't listen to you and never will.

"Man of the Year: Jim Reed"

This library thing stinks to high heaven of a land grab for the Town Center. Do you think he would still spend so much on a library if it was located at the north end of town or different location?

Don't Boycott SV

Please don't boycott Scotts Valley buinesses. The City has enough financial concerns and too many Scotts Valley businesses are already struggling. While I agree with the assessment that the Chamber has rewarded the people on the Council who fund it, boycotting small businesses is not an appropriate response to the Chamber's actions. Scotts Valley businesses will have more than their fair share of challenges if Target is built and we don't want to make the plight of the existing businesses any more difficult.

WoW....Man of the Year.....Mr. "Family Values" who brought you more taxation in the form of Measure "C" to build a new downtown that is a complete failure and is a "bridge to nowhere" except to the highest taxes in Santa Cruz County..... the "Man of the Year" who opposed Measure Q and the rebuilding of the middle school who worked through his friend Vic Marani with councilmembers Bustichi and Johnson to see that it did not pass......then flip-flopped very late to support it tepidly because he was up for an election and "Mr. Family Values" couldn't be against children before this important election.....When our schools are in desperate need of funds our "Man of the Year" made sure that the Chamber of Commerce recieved funding but no funding assistance for achools..... Mr. "Family Values" who manipulated his way with the help of Busitichi,Johnson and Lind to become "Mayor" next year in that all important election year, go ask councilmember Aguilar about that move...... Mr. "Family Values" who has supported Vic Marani who was a paid consultant to bring Target to town and who will vote on this project even though this is a clear conflict of interest......but the most ironic part of Mr. "Family Values" nomination by the SV Chamber of Commerce is that he writes all these glowing articles for this paper about all the great small businesses in this community (which is a clear conflict of interest as a voting councilmember) but when he votes for Target he will be responsible for the death of many of the same Chamber of Commerce businesses that voted for him.

He is truly deserving!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Our Scotts Valley Chamber of Commerce has no credibalty. They made a back room deal to support Target for future monetery considerations.Chamber Ambassador/Councilwoman Donna Lind and Chamber Board member Diane Bianconi have made it very clear they supports a Target store in Scots Valley.Council Member Dene Bustichi is a Chamber Ambassador and Vice Mayor Jim Reed writes the Chamber news letter.

City Manager Steve Ando is a Chamber Board Member. If you are not in favor of a Target store in Scotts Valley you don't stand a chance from this group.

Man of the Year: Jim Reed

Gimme a barf bag. When do we get a chance to vote this guy out? Seems like he's been on the council too long. He was appointed by Dean and Randy and now thinks he's Mr. Scotts Valley. He tried to kill our skatepark and all this San Jose-like development seemed to start about the time he arrived on the scene.

I read these blogs and though I think they are misrepresentative what strikes me most is that the submitters don't have the courage to include their names...
Beautification of SV
|
October 16, 2009
I read this article after driving down Scotts Valley Drive. As I passed BCI construction on Scotts Valley Drive I though to myself what an ugly mess. It isn't bad enough that Mr. Bustichi has planted his rusting John Deere right next to the road but he also has several ugly home made and perhaps illegal signs plastered on his property next to the road as well. Somehow this doesn't seem to jive with his award for the beautification of Scotts Valley.

To say that Dene Bustichi has contributed to the "Beautification of Scotts Valley" is outrageous. Dene and his build at all cost attitude has done more to destroy the small town community of Scotts Valley than anyone else has that I can think of. If less trees and more concrete are your idea of "Beautifiation" then you picked the right man. Welcome to South San Jose!

I can't think of a complete group of people including Jim Reed and Dene Bustichi who've contributed more to Scotts Valley. You've all worked hard to make this community grow and prosper! Kudos!

The Chamber knows how to reward those who pay the Chamber bills. Unlike at most Cities the Scotts Valley City Council funds a significant amount of the cost of the Chamber. No surprise the Chamber rewarded the council members with two awards. Jim Reed as Man of the Year and Dene Bustichi SV Beautification. Yea we get it. You will be back next year asking for another funding raise. Your tax dollars at work!
