Dorothy McPherson-Donell of Scotts Valley will sing along with the five other members of Uptown Singers, the Bay Area act, during a performance of “The Best of Opera to Broadway and Cabaret” at a lunch scheduled for noon, May 22, at In Vino Veritas, 230 Mt. Hermon Road, in Scotts Valley.

McPherson-Donnel is the group’s lead soprano. Admission is $50.

National Merit scholar honors

Four local students attending Pacific Collegiate School in Santa Cruz have been singled out for recognition in the National Merit Scholarship Program for their performance on the long-running program’s exam.

Rogan Kriedt of Bonny Doon was among the school’s four National Merit semifinalists. He plans to pursue a career in environmental science, plays standup bass, is president of the surf club and participates in Junior Statesmen of America.

The program also will issue letters of commendation to Cecilia Baron of Scotts Valley, Nathan Holiday of Felton and Molly Shane of Bonny Doon.

Vine Hill student wins poster contest

Justin Osorio, a second-grade student at Vine Hill Elementary School, is one of 13 students from three counties to win the annual Clean Air Month poster contest conducted by Monterey Bay Unified Air Pollution Control District.

His was among more than 850 posters submitted by first- through eighth-graders on the theme “A Healthier Tomorrow — Do Your Part to Help Clear the Air.”
