San Lorenzo Way road closure on tap

The San Lorenzo Way Bridge over the San Lorenzo River in Felton will be closed from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, Feb. 3 through Friday, Feb. 7. Santa Cruz County Public Works will be performing deck repairs to the bridge during that time and the department recommends motorists to use alternate routes. Additionally, Public works repaired the Quail Hollow Bridge at Zayante Creek in Ben Lomond on January 28 and 29.

 

Poets sought in Felton

The Felton Library Friends asks San Lorenzo Valley residents to submit poems on the theme “Sharing” for the 10th annual San Lorenzo Valley Poetry Reading.

Entries must be submitted by March 28 by email to slvpoetryreading@gmail.com or by mail to Felton Library Friends, PO Box 1245, Felton, CA 95018.

One poem per poet may be submitted along with the poet’s name, age, email address and phone number. Age categories are 4 to 8, 9 to 12, 13 to 17 and adult.

Santa Cruz County Poet Laureate David Swanger will select the winning poems that will be read by their authors at the SLV Poetry reading at 7 p.m. April 24 at the Felton Community Hall. Additionally, poems will be published in the Press-Banner.

Author to hold book event

Scotts Valley author Wei Wei will be a part of a book event for her published memoir “Tracing Our Footsteps: Fifteen Tales of Hope, Struggle, and Triumph” from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12.

The event will be held at the Porter Memorial Library, 3050 Porter Street in Soquel. Refreshments will be served.

 

Volunteers needed for metro committee

The Santa Cruz Metro Advisory Committee has open positions, including a position for a Scotts Valley resident.

Volunteers will be appointed by the Santa Cruz Metro Board of Directors. Those who are appointed will serve on the committee for a term of two years to advise Metro’s board on policy and operations matters. The Metro Advisory Committee meets at the Pacific Station Conference Room, 920 Pacific Avenue in Santa Cruz, at 6 p.m. on the third Wednesday of each month.

Rail trail talk in Scotts Valley

Santa Cruz County Regional Transportation Executive Director George Dondero and Senior Transportation Planner Cory Caletti will speak about the Santa Cruz Branch line and accompanying bicycle and pedestrian path plans at a luncheon put on by the League of Women Voters in Scotts Valley.

The luncheon and silent auction will be held from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 9 at the Hilton, 6001 La Madrona Drive in Scotts Valley.

Red Cross volunteers sought

Organizers from the American Red Cross Northern California Blood Services Region will host a volunteer orientation at noon, February 19 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 220 Elk Street in Santa Cruz. Potential volunteers will learn how to help the American Red Cross in the area. Attendees must sign up in advance.
