Alice in Wonderland just got a little wackier with the latest musical written by Little People’s Repertory Theater guru Janinne Chadwick.
Her latest rock musical “Alice’s Avengers in Underland” follows the story of Alice as she teams up and battles superheroes and supervillains in the throes of Underland, a secret land beneath Gotham City.
The musical features 72 cast members and 26 original musical numbers written to the tunes of the Grateful Dead, Journey, Taylor Swift and even “We are Young” by the band Fun.
Among the theatrics are special effects, such as Superman flying across the stage at one point in the show.
Aaron McKay, a 13-year-old takes on the roll of Penguin.
“It’s really techie,” he said. “There are a lot of bigger rolls. It’s a very good show.”
Harena Haile, 14, plays Alice and has been part of LPRT for four years.
“It’s such an amazing program,” she said. “There are so many families involved. It’s really fun.”
The show has many experienced actors as 22 young actors and actresses will graduate from LPRT after the summer show.
“It’s making for a really great show because they are many of the principals,” said Chadwick, who based many of the superheroes on the 1960s TV show versions of the characters.
Musical director Arindam Krishna Das leads the music which includes a full band including percussion, keyboard, bass, saxophone and guitar. The show is directed by LPRT veteran Daria Troxell.
