Peer pressure ain’t got nothin’ on Samantha Getz.
The 18-year-old San Lorenzo Valley High School graduate was honored for an incredible achievement during her high school graduation ceremony on June 21. She was never absent.
Not just during her four years at San Lorenzo Valley High School, but the previous nine years at San Lorenzo elementary and middle schools, too. In all, she never missed a day of school for 13 years.
Getz lives in Felton with her family. She was inspired to continue the feat by something she read.
“I saw an article about a girl who never missed a day of class and ever since then it became a personal goal for me,” Getz said on Tuesday.
The accomplishment becomes even more astounding because of the schedule Getz kept. During all four years of high school, Getz’s mother Michelle Getz would drive her to seminary class at 6 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Ben Lomond, and then her father Steve Getz would pick her up at 6:45 a.m. for 7 a.m. class at SLV.
Some mornings it was not easy, but Getz relied on the triple alarm combination of an alarm clock, the alarm on her cell phone, and her parents.
Getz said that her friends did tempt her to ditch, but she never considered it. She was honest with them about her conviction never to miss a day and she said they respected her decision.
Occasionally, Getz said, her seminary class in Ben Lomond would let out late. Those were the closest she came to being lat to class. However she always made it before the bell. And sickness never derailed her. She would go to school with mild colds, and she said she never got to the point where she was sick enough to miss class.
Now that her schooling is over, Getz plans to attend Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.
San Lorenzo Valley School officials are not aware of any other student who never missed a day of school, although they have not tracked records like this closely.
