At her request, there will be no services for Grace D. Diess, a 13-year resident of a local retirement home, who died in Scotts Valley last month. She was 97.
Mrs. Diess was raised in Detroit, Mich., by Albert and Mary (Witman) Dersch. She and her husband, Stuart W. Diess, moved in 1970 to Aptos, where she became active in her community.
She was active in several organizations, maintaining a 76-year membership as past matron of the Santa Cruz Redwoods Chapter No. 273 Order of the Eastern Star. She was also a member of the First Baptist Church of Aptos, a past noble grand in the Martha Washington Rebekah Lodge No. 131 in Soquel and a former member of the Dominican Hospital Auxiliary.
For many years, Mrs. Diess served as a musician for her church and for the Eastern Star, Rebekah Lodge and International Order of the Rainbow Assembly No. 28.
She lived at Oak Tree Villa in Scotts Valley for more than 13 years before her death.
Mrs. Diess was adopted 37 years ago as “Grandma Grace” by Tammy Hoffman in Rainbow, thus becoming a member of the family of Ray and Charlotte Hoffman. She became a grandmother of three and great-grandmother to four. She enjoyed spending holidays and family gatherings with them.
Mrs. Diess is survived by two nieces and two nephews and the members of the Hoffman family.
