Kindergarten registration opens in Boulder Creek

Children who will be 5 years old by Oct. 1 are eligible to begin kindergarten this fall. Registration packets are available at the Boulder Creek Elementary School office, 400 W. Lomond St., from noon to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Registration begins Friday, Feb. 15, and runs through May.

Kindergartners need proof of immunizations and a birth certificate to register.

Families can sign up for an orientation session and a tour by contacting the school registrar.

Propane co-op seeks members

A group of Boulder Creek residents is recruiting possible members for a Boulder Creek Propane Buyers Co-op in hopes of negotiating lower propane prices with companies that serve the rural community.

Boulder Creek area residents who are interested can sign up on a Google Groups page,

There is no obligation for expressing interest. No names or email addresses will be shared, and information will be kept confidential.

Residents can also email or send mail to Boulder Creek Propane Co-Op, P.O. Box 381, Boulder Creek, CA 95006.

Once a significant number of residents express interest in participating, the steering committee will request proposals from propane suppliers based on the number of potential customers.


Sheriff’s office completes Felton cleanup

The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office conducted a supervised cleanup of several unlawful campsites along the Mount Hermon Road and Graham Hill Road corridor in Felton on Feb. 7.

Deputies posted signs several weeks in advance that warned campers of related criminal violations and requested that they move.


Grad night group seeks donations

A committee that is planning a Safe and Sober grad night event for San Lorenzo Valley High School is looking for donations for a silent auction at the group’s third annual wine and chocolate fundraiser.

The event will be March 9 at Bruno’s BBQ, 230 Mount Hermon Road, in Scotts Valley. The fundraiser is open to the public.

All proceeds will benefit the 2013 Safe and Sober Grad night in June.

Readers announced for Felton readathon

During the third annual Felton Library Read-a-thon, community members Lise Quintana, Jason McCluskey, Natalie Gallagher, Anna Morris, Martha Stevens, Dave Poetzinger, Doug Morris, Tandy Beal and several San Lorenzo Valley High School students will read excerpts from their favorite books.

The event, sponsored by the Felton Library Friends, is free to attend and will take place from 3 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, at the library, 6299 Gushee St., in Felton.


Hospice seeks volunteers

Hospice of Santa Cruz County wants men and women to join its volunteer visitor program.

Volunteers give support directly to patients and their families, both in their homes and at skilled nursing facilities in the county.

Applications are due by Feb. 28, and an eight-session training course begins March 7.

Women’s club installs cigarette receptacles

 The Valley Women’s Club has installed four cigarette-butt disposal containers in the San Lorenzo Valley.

They are located at Boulder Creek Brewery & Cafe, Junction Park, Henfling's Tavern and Don Quixote's International Music Hall.

The receptacles were purchased with part of a watershed education grant from the San Lorenzo Valley Water District and contributions from John Schumacher at Hallcrest Vineyards, along with other community sponsors.

Each bright red container bears a logo created by Bonny Doon artist Stephanie Sellers Sakasai, including the words “The Butt Stops Here.”

More receptacles will be placed in the valley in the coming months.

The club’s “The Butt Stops Here” campaign includes educational posters and mailers and a website. Money, labor and space for receptacles have been donated by local businesses and residents.

Contributions to support the campaign can be sent with the donor’s name, address, phone and email address to The Butt Stops Here, c/o The Valley Women's Club, P.O. Box 574, Ben Lomond, CA 95005.
