The third year of Scotts Valley’s Relay For Life will kick off this Saturday for 24 hours of activities at Skypark to honor, remember and celebrate those whose lives have been affected by cancer.

The relay, an American Cancer Society fundraiser, will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 19. Disc jockey Laurie Roberts will start the opening ceremonies as cancer survivors and family members of those who have died release doves in honor and remembrance.

According to Jackie Maurer, the event’s organizer, about 240 people have signed up to participate, but usually about 100 more turn up the day of the event.

This year, each lap will have its own theme, such as Punk Rock Lap, Mustache Lap and Clown Lap.

Throughout the event, food, beverages, crafts and other items will be available for sale at the various teams’ campsites.

The community has been very supportive of the event, Maurer said. So far, she estimated $47,000 had been raised of the $65,000 goal.

Sandabs will cater a lunch for cancer survivors.

For the evening luminaria ceremony, former “Survivor” contestant Lex Vandenberg will be on hand as a featured speaker. Local resident Dominica Schaaf will sing during the ceremony.

“The cancer survivors are the true survivors,” Maurer said.

The relay will wrap up at 10 a.m. Sunday morning.
