Local soccer team third in tournament

The Santa Cruz County Breakers U-13 Boys team took third place in the Soccer by the Bay Tournament, the largest youth soccer tournament in Northern California, over the weekend, Aug. 20 and 21.

The team went into the final game and battled to a 0-0 tie at the end of regulation. After two five-minute halves and still no score, the Breakers won on penalty kicks, making three of four shots while goalie Brendan Magee saved two of the opponents’ shots. Players from Scotts Valley and the San Lorenzo Valley are Erik Bullard, Andre Collen, Chris Copriviza, Nathan Fish, Gavin Klim, Brendan Magee, Tanner Murray and Charlie Weigel. The team is coached by Scotts Valley’s Victor Martinez.

Summer basketball season closes

The Scotts Valley High school boys basketball team finished its eight-week summer league season with a 4-6 record under new varsity head coach Charles Burk and assistants Joe Espinola and Josh Freeman. Monte Vista Christian School hosts the annual league.

The 14-member Falcon roster comprised Jack Pasquini, Garrett Johnston, Andrew Stumbo, Ari Wargon, Tyler Marshall, Joseph Espinola, Willie Johnston, Jacob Dixon, Steven Koflanvoich, Jack Codiga, Alec Vucinich, Nick Rains, Deonte Balhin and Jace Hardwick.

Seniors wrap up bocce tournament

The Scotts Valley Senior Bocce Ball Summer Tournament was played Friday morning, Aug. 19, at the Skypark bocce courts.

The champion teams from Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday leagues competed in a playoff to settle the overall winner after nine weeks of round-robin games.

In a close competition, the overall team winner was Bodacious Bunch from the Tuesday league, with Sue Camerena, Patti Fickett, Jill Cramer and Brian Peterson substituting for Dave Wilson. Taking second place was the Thursday league’s Team Doce; in third place was the Wednesday league’s BB Friends; and finishing fourth was the Monday league’s Team Quatro.
