Felton resident working as dentist

Audrey Wingo, a 2002 San Lorenzo Valley High graduate, has begun work as an associate dentist with Dr. Jennifer Wynn in Morgan Hill. Wingo attended University of California, Davis, on a tennis scholarship, majoring in Spanish and minoring in chemistry before graduating in 2006. She continued her education at NYU College of Dentistry, where she graduated in 2010 with a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree.

Former SV firefighter named chief in Aptos

Jeff Terpstra, a firefighter who began his career in Scotts Valley in 1977, was hired this week as the Aptos-La Selva Beach fire chief.

Terpstra, who lives in Soquel, joined Aptos-La Selva in 1985 as a firefighter and paramedic. He was selected from a field of 31 applicants.

He replaced former Chief Tom Crosser, who will retire after 34 years in fire service.

SLV student earns National Merit recognition

San Lorenzo Valley High senior Peter Horton has qualified as one of about 16,000 semifinalists in the 56th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

He will compete for one of about 8,400 National Merit scholarships, valued at more than $36 million, that will be offered in the spring.

About 90 percent of the semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, and about half of the finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title.
