Samuel Zehr, a 19-year-old from Ben Lomond, suffered major injuries when his Ford Mustang flipped on its side while he was driving on Love Creek Road.

According to the California Highway Patrol, Zehr was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.

Zehr and his passenger, a 17-year-old Brookdale boy, had to crawl out of the wreckage after Zehr’s car crossed the double yellow lines, crashed into a dirt mound and rolled onto its right side, the CHP said. He was driving south on the mountain road at about 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31.

Zehr and his passenger were flown to Stanford for treatment, CHP officer Sarah Jackson said.

Zehr has been charged with a felony DUI because his passenger was injured. He could be charged with child endangerment, as well, Jackson said.

Zehr was arrested but not booked into Santa Cruz County Jail because of his injuries. Preliminary tests three hours after the crash showed his blood alcohol content at 0.13, significantly over the legal limit of 0.08 for those 21 and older.

The crash followed less than a week after the release of results from the California Healthy Kids Survey, which discusses alcohol and drug use.

The survey showed that teenagers in Santa Cruz County have higher levels of alcohol use and binge drinking than at their peers across the state. The results also showed that alcohol may be easier for young people to obtain now than two years ago.

Even good kids can make a bad decision.

My prayers are with the families. Let's hope others can learn from their mistake.

I hope neither of the young men were disabled. My prayers are with the families involved. Thank God no innocent bystanders or drivers were injured or killed. Stupid decisions have destroyed the lives of too many of our neighbors over the years. Hopefully, it's not too late for Zehr to learn from his mistake.
