Sports Shorts: Bethany’s Cassaro named player of week

Bethany University junior Gabriel Cassaro was chosen as the California Pacific Conference Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 21.  

The native of São Paulo, Brazil, had three goals in leading the Bruins over Cal State Maritime, 5-0, in Vallejo. 

Bethany is 1-0 in conference and 2-2 overall.

Faith Hoops hosts all-star gala

The newly formed Faith Hoops basketball league will host a family-friendly all-star day Oct. 11 at the Mount Hermon Conference Center, 37 Conference Drive, in Mount Hermon.

The day will include family games and activities beginning at 3 p.m., a 3-point shootout at 4 p.m., a slam dunk contest at 5 p.m., and a 5-on-5 all-star game at 6:30 p.m.

Faith Hoops took over the countywide Santa Cruz Bible Basketball League this fall.

Falcon girls finish third at Stanford invite

Freshman Vanessa Fraser (19 minutes, 22 seconds) finished eighth among Division 4 racers at the Stanford Invitational cross country meet on Saturday, Sept. 26, to lead the Scotts Valley girls to a third-place finish in the race.

Fraser was followed by sisters Lauren Germany (23rd in 20:06) and Kayla Germany (28th in 20:29).

San Lorenzo Valley’s Caitlin Taylor (20:47) finished 38th overall to lead the Cougars, who finished 12th of 27 teams.

On the boy’s side, SLV finished 10th out of 32 teams, and Scotts Valley finished 13th.

Scotts Valley’s Kevin Mangen’s 15th-place finish in 16:34 made him the top local runner, and he was followed by SLV’s Allan Hetke in 22nd place with a time of 16:43. For the Falcons, Kyle McNulty (16:50) finished 31st. SLV’s Landis MacMillan (17:27), who was second for the Cougars, finished 58th.

Registration still open for kids triathlon

The 13th annual SuperKid Triathlon will be at Simpkins Family Swim Center from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Oct. 11.

Children 3 through 15 years old will swim and then ride a bike and run through the nearby Swan Lake State Park.
