Flingers wrap up softball title

In the San Lorenzo Valley IOOF recreational softball league, the Flingers defeated the Woodpeckers, 11-7, in the men’s league championship game Aug. 18 to capture the summer league title.

The Flingers were the top team during the regular season and continued their dominance in the playoffs, defeating the Sharks 20-5 on Aug. 11, to put them into the championship game.

In the league’s coed B division, the Mountain Mechanics took care of business, beating the Janitors 26-14 to capture the title Aug. 17.

In the A division, the Steelheads defeated the Mountain Mechanics, 7-2, to win the title, also Aug. 17.

The fall season begins Sept. 12. Games will be played Sundays. Sign-ups are ongoing online.

Prep sports fire up

High school fall sports at San Lorenzo Valley and Scotts Valley high schools are in full swing. Cross country, water polo, football, and girls volleyball, tennis and golf teams at the high schools are practicing for September matches and games.

Bethany fall sports ready for action

The Bethany University women’s volleyball and men’s and women’s soccer and cross country teams are in training for their first contests of the season.

The volleyball team will open its preseason with five matches in Scotts Valley starting today, Aug. 27, and running through Sept. 3.

The cross country team has an early-season time trial today at Wilder Ranch State Park before heading to Belmont on Sept. 4 for the Battle of the Bay race at Crystal Springs Cross Country Course.

The men’s soccer team opens against the Academy of Art of San Francisco at Skypark on Sept. 3, and the women will play the following day.
