The team will hold an informational meeting from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15 at Scotts Valley Library, 351 Kings Village Road. Practices begin December 7.
The team is run by Steve Simonovich of Santa Cruz Pasta Factory and Andrew Cavaletto of Scotts Valley Cyclesport and includes boys and girls from 6th grade through 12th grade from schools in Scotts Valley and the San Lorenzo Valley.
Last season there were 35 kids on the team which practices on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school and on Saturday mornings.
“We had kids on the team mountain biking for the first time,” Simonovich said. “All the kids are challenged whether they are advanced or beginning riders.”
Simonovich enjoys organizing and coaching the team, and especially likes that every rider gets to compete in races, no matter what their skill level is.
“Our goal is to make the kids better riders and more physically fit, not matter where they are starting from,” he said.
The team is part of the 36-team NorCal High School Cycling League.
Last season they placed eighth of 36 teams, led by Porter Wesson a junior from Scotts Valley High School who finished first in the sophomore division out of 61 riders.
Wesson has been riding since he was 8-years-old and moved to Scotts Valley from Minnesota in eighth grade. He joined SCMCT last season when one of his friends suggested it.
“I really like how the NorCal League has incorporated a ton of kids,” Wesson said.
Wesson said the team enjoys riding together in Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park during weekday practices and then longer rides on Saturdays at Wilder Ranch or University of California, Santa Cruz.
Typical races in the NorCal League are 10 to 15 miles and take an hour to an hour and a half to complete, Wesson said.
Other riders who placed well included Mitchell Pisciota from Scotts Valley who finished 13th of 91 riders in the junior varsity division and Garret Hammack from Scotts Valley who took 15th in the same division.
Behind Wesson were Dylan O’Connor who finished 12th and Ryan Simonovich who finished 14th in the sophomore division.
